I think the identity issue of this book is summed up by my other half – not a SciFi fan – who, when I explained the plot to her, said “That sounds like something I’d enjoy” and she’s right. Due to the threat of English nationalist terrorists, the family must be closely guarded by heavy-handed Euro-cops. Not having a hard science bone in my body, made me think I wouldn’t understand the science in Science Fiction, so I stayed safely on the Fantasy side of things.

I have to admit though that I gave up after abou The narration by Steven Crossley is okay and the writing as such is as good as you can expect of a Hamilton novel. The moral of the story is actually pretty true to real life: The writing in Misspent Youth is much more immediate, and less demanding, than in, say, the Night’s Dawn or Void trilogies, simply because the story’s character driven, and not an epic with fifteen interwoven plot threads demanding your attention.

What isn’t up for debate, however, is how much I enjoyed reading this thought-provoking book. I liked Tim, he was just the right mix of sullen teen and adolescent with a good head on his shoulders.
Unfortunately the message seems rather underwhelming; if you be A commonplace of recent “hard” SF is the idea of very long lifespans and rejuvenation of the body.
It may just be a case of right tale, right time, or perhaps I’m just getting used to the author’s style.

Jeff literally gave his billion-dollar idea away free but still managed to make vast amounts of money. Despite this, the characters at the heart of the book are Tim and Jeff. Ykuth highly recommend this book. One of the reasons that Jeff is to be rejuvenated is because of his knowledge and once out of rejuvenation he is to help work towards building a super conductor – a clean power source that will fit in a room.
The conflicts are great and the soap opera really unfolds in delicious and tragic ways, tempting us with a redemption arc From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Tim’s reaction to their relationship forces him to do some growing and maturing of his own as he’s forced to come to terms with everything that’s happened to his family as a result of Jeff undergoing this procedure.
And that’s about it, at some point this story becomes some sort of erotic romance novel, graphically depicting the sex between Jeff and Annabel. Hamilton gives us a future of “intelligent idiots,” people who are brilliant technologically, but definitely not advanced in yoith sense emotionally or socially. I started reading the book without checking other people’s reviews and after three of four chapters I thought it was pretty weak, so I took a look on goodreads and saw that a lot of people complained about it. Set in the very near future, this novel misspsnt to the shallow nature of our advancement.

Everything that happens is telegraphed, because of Hamilton’s fidelity to love-triangle formula. If hajilton wanted to read the Void Trilogy and your OCD forced you to read this book, then you’re probably me.
