I gave the book three stars for the writing, which, considering it was Seton’s second novel, is remarkably mature and well-paced; the tension is palpable, the atmosphere evocatively limned on every page, and the chill of horror and suspicion is felt even in the happiest moments of the novel. It was very evocative of Katherine in its writing style. On the way home, their carriage is surrounded by a band of tenant farmers disguised as Indians; a bullet shatters two windows and he draws her near as the shot rings out.
